Alan Carter developed his interest in Hypnotherapy as a Surveying Student in the early 70’s and thought that Hypnosis was an interesting form of entertainment. One of his party tricks was to ‘make a smokers hate smoking’ – against their will’. This amusing trick actually proved much more popular with smokers who actually wanted help to kick the habit and clearly demonstrated the usefulness of hypnosis to bring about desirable change.
Following a successful career as a Chartered Building Surveyor Alan continued to be intrigued with Hypnosis recognising its enormous potential in a therapeutic environment. He finally decided to follow his passion and commenced formal training as a therapist in 2003 gaining a COSCA accredited Certificate in Counselling Skills followed by a Certificate, Diploma and Practitioners Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and also a Practitioners Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy through the London College of Clinical Hypnosis. He is currently completing a Post Graduate MSC/Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Stirling University.
Alan is committed to providing the highest standard of professional support and was one of the first Hypnotherapists in the country to achieve a new national standard of excellence for his therapy awarded by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare. This recognition places him at the forefront of a national drive to provide a benchmark for standards and safety for the public. Practitioners registered with the CNHC meet national occupational standards and abide by a rigorous code of conduct, performance and ethics and allows GPs, hospitals, private healthcare providers and insurance companies to refer patients to hypnotherapy practitioners or to make hypnotherapy more readily available in health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals.
He is also a member of Britain’s leading professional bodies promoting Hypnotherapy as a registered practitioner member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BSCH), on the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), accredited by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). In addition to being bound by the ethical codes and regulations of these institutions, Alan also subscribes to regular professional clinical supervision and continuing professional development in order to ensure that his clients receive the highest standard of professional support.
In January 2008 Alan set up a full time hypnotherapy practice to benefit the East Lothian Area from his home at Seton Dean Lodge near Longniddry where clients can benefit from the comfortable relaxed coastal setting. Since then he has helped hundreds of clients to overcome a wide range of difficulties and achieve their goals in life. Stopping Smoking and overcoming Phobias are possibly the most common conditions effectively treated often in one session however Alan has been surprised to find that the most demand has been to assist Weight Control through Healthy eating and life style change. The possibilities are endless with almost any disorder benefiting from this therapy that addresses the route cause of a problem affecting a human being rather than merely treating a symptom as so often is the case.
Alan works in partnership with Anne Foster who offers support through Person Centred Counselling for individuals and couples. Anne has offered many years of professional practice both in business support and in medical settings but is now focused on offering her services privately to the local community. She is a BACP Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist and trained Counselling Supervisor. Together our combined professional support ensures that you can be assured of the most appropriate help available locally if you need it, when you need it.”
