What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a combination of ancient healing practices of acupuncture and kinesiology with modern psychotherapeutic approaches, turning it into a powerful psychothereuptic tool which is gaining popularity with the medical profession and mental health practitioners.
What other names is EFT known by?
It’s umbrella term is “Energy Psychology” but you may also hear Matrix, Official EFT, Meridian Tapping, It is NOT associated with what is referred to as ‘Faster Emotionally Focused Transformation’ (FasterEFT) .
Some countries require therapists to have a license to practice so you would need to check with the country you are working in. Gary Craig (the founder of EFT) now calls his teachings “Official” EFT but there are still gaps in this teaching. However, most EFT Practitioners and Trainers who have been practicing for some years will likely have been trained to follow the core traditional teachings set down by Gary Craig and integrate their own skill sets.
History of EFT
The history of EFT dates back over 5,000 years when acupuncture points were found on a preserved body in the Swiss Alps. EFT is a derivation of acupuncture in that it uses the meridian points nearest to the surface of the skin when tapping. In the mid 1960’s Chiropractor, Dr George Goodheart began to investigate the links between apparent muscle strength, the body’s organs and meridians and he developed a diagnostic therapy based on muscle testing (Applied Kinesiology). In the 70’s John Diamond integrated Applied Kinesiology into his psychotherapy practice. Dr Roger Callahan had studied with Diamond and was also interested in Eastern medicine. He experimented with tapping on meridians with a client named Mary who had a fear of water. Thought Field Therapy was born and involved tapping on certain points on the body in a strict order. Gary Craig studied with Dr Callahan and reduced the number of tapping points and discovered results were still achieved. He called this Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
How does it work?
EFT works by stimulating energy points on the surface of the skin by tapping on them whilst focusing on the problem. When combined with specific procedures, signals are sent to the brain which may impact stress chemicals such as cortisol and DHEA, as well as deactivate limbic system arousal and alter neural pathways. . When using EFT for a traumatic memory for example, the visual memory will become hard to focus on and the emotion attached to it will lessen in intensity. The rapid results experienced with EFT seem almost too good to be true, compared to conventional talk therapy for example.
What happens during a session?
Usually the Practitioner will offer you a consultation to give you the opportunity to discuss your problems and so that you can decide whether or not you feel comfortable working with them. During the session, the Practitioner may tap on your meridians (located on the face, collarbone, hands, under arm and top of head) or ask you to tap as you repeat certain words and phrases. You may be asked to roll your eyes, hum and count but don’t worry – this is purely to get your brain in gear!
What will I feel?
Everyone experiences different signs and sensations when using EFT. Some of these sensations are tightness or tingling in the body, feeling light-headed, warm, emotional or just feeling very relaxed are others. None of these are harmful and just demonstrate that EFT is working – though EFT works whether you experience these feelings or not. When asked to recall the emotion or memory afterwards, clients often report “it’s in the distance”…”it doesn’t bother me now” or “I can’t bring up the emotion”.
Why use it instead of “talk therapy”?
Traditional psychotherapy has utilized the power of speech to transform emotions. However, discussion alone does not have the power to significantly change one’s most innermost negative feelings or emotions. EFT adds a more unique therapeutic dimension to other conventional therapies by removing these emotions whilst leaving the memory intact or slightly vague. If left untreated, these negative emotions can cause an imbalance in the body which ultimately can lead to physical and psychological problems.
Can anyone use it?
EFT can be self-applied for small issues but should never be used on others without appropriate professional training**. Don’t view EFT as a remedy or a substitute for medical treatment in the case of acute problems. If you feel out of your depth when working on yourself, please consult a qualified Practitioner.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends upon many factors. Some phobias can be cleared within minutes whilst abuse issues could take weeks. Compared to many other therapies, EFT is usually much quicker and longer lasting.
